October 23, 2019; 11:20 – New Rome Coliseum

Aikaterinē had been to arenas many times before. Usually a grand affair, the daughter of Zeus would typically be placed right of her mother as they paraded their way to the royal box. From there things were simple: watch, clap, do not look stupid. It was not her favorite thing to do around Sestos or whatever polis she was in, but it was at least an entertaining day.

Oh how 3,000 years changes things.

There were ten minutes to go until showtime in New Rome. At the unusually excited suggestion of Megapenthes she signed up to fight at the coliseum, landing a half-hour morning slots. The organizer told her that “tens of people” would be watching, though Kat had her doubts as to a crowd so bare. It was the arena, after all; the masses ate this stuff up.

Then again, modernity was weird like that.

Kat was told by the organizer that someone would “swing by and let ya know when it’s ya time on the block,” so she sat on the locker room bench until it was time. With the help of some Hephaestus campers, her original armor had been recreated in celestial bronze, which she wore over a tri-blend chiton an Aphrodite camper custom-made for her. Alone with the lockers, she fiddled with the hilt of Danny’s xiphos as her spear and shield leaned against a set of the steel storage boxes that gave the room its name.

Aelia was thrilled. Gladiator games were always the most exciting part of festivals. Swords flashing, clangs of metal, sand and dust and blood and sweat. And that roar... that deafening roar of the crowd, a forest of arms raised to the sky, hands cupped around their mouths. She remembered briefly the games she'd been to, sitting in wooden bleachers with Ravnthu and Iatrokles, or shouting alongside her cousin Novius in Stabiae. The amphitheater there was probably the most elegant she'd ever been to, with high colonnades and woolen cushions - but nothing compared to the ones here in New Rome. The first time she saw the Colosseum, she had to scrape her jaw off the marble cobblestones.

"You're next." The guy with the scroll popped in and brought her back to the present. "Get ready."

Aelia grinned. "Always am."She was excited to find out what they would throw at her out there. Yes it was a duel, but the Colosseum had some nasty surprises to spice up gladiator fights. Razor nets? Flamethrowers? Spike pits? Regardless, there was nothing out there that she couldn't handle. Nothing at all. She was sure of it.
Aelia stood up and fastened her plumed helmet under her chin, then slid down the golden visor. One last check-up: she patted herself down, testing the straps of her manica, rolling her shield arm, straightening her greaves. She could hear the clamors of the crowd above, dust catching the light as it trickled from the ceiling. She gave her trainer a thumbs up and a dab. "Let's get this bread."

Aelia’s trainer gave the ancient Roman an annoyed glare. She was about to go out and put her life on the line, and what does she do? Dab and meme — like a f***ing child.

“Riiiight,” Fay Dawes said. “Just don’t do that when anyone’s looking. Don’t want the judges thinking you’re some kind of asshat, do you?”

The daughter of Pax had only a pugio on hand, which was essentially going naked for her. The coliseum staff polo and khakis only provided protection from rain and the occasional blood, useless against an armed memer. Despite it not being her day to fight, Fay was still looking Aelia over for weak points — always good to be prepared.

Across the stadium Kat’s trainer popped back in. Despite having years of gladiatorial experience on top of her decorated legion career, being tasked to prep this girl for the arena psyched her a bit. A daughter of Zeus? Who has never fought before? And from ancient times? Kinda a lot to deal with.

Luckily, the daughter of Zeus was not giving her a hard time. Listening intently, nodding along, asking questions when they come by. When the man with a scroll popped in to say “Five minutes, get ready,” Colleen Nary had to come up with some parting words on the spot.

“Okay,” the daughter of Bellona said, “so I know you don’t have that much training under your belt, but you just need to be confident in yourself and what you know. Can you do that for me?”

“Yes,” nodded Kat, “I can do that.”

“Perfect. Now get out there and kick some ass.”

With an understanding reached Kat donned her helm and grabbed her weapons. It was time to see what she could do.

The sunlight flashed brightly as the metal doors slid open. Half blinded, Aelia jogged up into the arena, the Colosseum cutting the sky into a perfect oval. Underneath her armour she was wearing nothing but an olive tunic - while modern clothes were comfortable, Aelia was used to fighting in lighter, breezier stuff. Form-fitting workout gear just felt weird - that strange cloth tended to stick to her body like fake silk.

She came to a stop and looked upwards at the judges. They were all sitting in their box, underneath a purple canopy whose golden tassels glittered in the sun. Middle-aged senators, a few ex-officers. She had seen some of their faces around the newspapyri but had rarely seen them in real. What would it take to impress the crème de la crème?

"Aelia, legionaria of the 1st Cohort!" she shouted - her English was still tainted with Oscan inflexions.
They nodded, and someone up there wrote something on a parchment. The sand felt hot through her sandals and she did a quick scan of the bleachers. They were packed full with noisy bundles of families, legionarii, students, etc. All the social medley of New Rome had come to see the games, and Aelia was prepared to give them the damn best show they'd ever had.
The opposite doors slid open too and out came a girl in a chiton and Greek armour. Aelia frowned - did they give her a Greek opponent because she was from Magna Graecia? A Greek vs a sort-of-Greek? The girl kicked up sand as she made her way over, striding with a certain confidence. There was something familiar about her, but she couldn't place what. Maybe because her hair, flowing from underneath her helmet like that, reminded her of Ravnthu, or Scarpia. The legion children often stole their fathers' equipment when no-one was looking.
But no, she thought, it was something different. That stride… that tan skin, golden like a sunset… Something flashed in her head. A moment of tangled limbs and breathlessness. Foggy, yes, but bright and ...intense? Aelia bit her tongue - for some reason, she tasted lotus. What was going on?

Then the girl said her name, and Aelia felt her stomach dropping to her knees.

As the doors to the arena opened, Kat walked through with an excitedly nervous strut. After all the years of watching from above, here she was in the dirt herself. In all the lifetimes she could have lived, none of them had the Sestian princess anywhere close to a pitch. But there she was, decked in armor, spear in hand, about to get herself completely brutalized in front of everybody.

As wrong as it sounded, it all felt completely right.

“Hey!” Kat snapped back from her marveled trance, the muffled call of Colleen putting the Greek back in her boots. The trainer pointed toward a regal canopy housing three older Romans. “Tell them who you are!”

The judges. Right. Kat had to impress them to win, which would be nice.

Kat turned to them, raising her shield and spear triumphantly high.

“Aikaterinē of Sestos, daughter of Zeus!”

The judges acknowledged, and Colleen shot her gladiator a thumbs up. At least things were off to good start.

“HEY! AELIA! SHE’S A GREEK! KICK HER RAT ASS!”

Fay was not about to have a true Roman — even an immature one like Aelia — lose to a f***ing Greek. For all she knew the judges were paid off to let their misplaced ally take a ‘dub. Typical of these soft Romans, trading honor for Feta bullshit.

“SHE DOESN’T EVEN LOOK THAT TOUGH!”

Aelia barely heard her coach. Her ears were still ringing with the words Aikaterinē of Sestos. Why were they so familiar? And what were all these memories suddenly popping into her head? The sword felt unusually heavy in her hand, and her heart was beating somewhere in her throat. This is not possible. It can't be... She glanced over through her visor. It can't be her. Which gods were responsible for this shamboozle? Which of the Fates did she have to track down?
But the announcer shouted something through a horn, amplified by large speakers which sent his words thundering around the Colosseum. The ground shook under her feet.

"INCIPITE!"

The word hit her like an electroshock. It was time to fight. But wait- she was going to fight Aikaterinē ? Her stomach knotted painfully at the thought. At least the daughter of Zeus didn't know who she was - that was something. She had a bit more time to figure things out, away from everything, get a headstart. All she had to do was get through this fight without getting recognized. Which, with her full-face visor, was going to be very easy after all. A peace of cake.
Yeah, she could do that.
Aelia bent her knees and held her shield up in front of her. It covered everything from shin to chin. Her sword hand was carefully hidden from view behind it, so that Kat would not see where the blow was coming from. You got this, she thought, although her nervousness increased with every passing heartbeat. What's a little fight against an old lover, huh? Shush, she told herself. Concentrate. She wasn't gonna last long if she kept on remembering things. Get going. Crank that, Soulja Boy. Superman dat oh.

Biting back her emotions, she kicked up sand at Kat's face and charged, leading with her shield.

"INCIPITE!"

And just like that it was on. Aikaterinē noticed the other fighte— gladiator stall for a moment. No bother, more time for her to get into the moment.

Just do what Lysandros taught you — knees bent, shield high, spear out, eyes up. Do not let the bdelyròs out of your sight; do not let the phlyaros slice you first.

The combatant charged pretty smartly like a coward behind a shield, kicking sand at Kat to blind her. Once again, no bother. Her sight will clear eventually, but at least she was not the person brining a metal shield to fight against a daughter of Zeus.

Kat sent a charge through her spear and thrust it at the all-protecting shield.

"AAAAAH!"

Aelia hissed in pain, her hand burning. Purple sparks rained from her shield. What the hell…? The crowd above them cheered in excitement, a few claps sounding off here and there. Obviously they were here to witness heroic powers and grand displays - not just how well the kids could handle their weapons. It was a spectacle after all and they were waiting to see what the new blood had in store.
The large screens replayed the move in slow motion, which gave Aelia exactly 0.23 seconds to figure out her next move. Against a daughter of Zeus, her powers were laughable - but not necessarily useless. If she calculated right, her bursts of speed could come in handy, as could her hidden strength. She just had to avoid touching that spear, like, ever again.
As fast as possible, she scanned her opponent for strengths and flaws - Gods, that felt so wrong. She didn't want to hurt her!

But you have to, her inner voice said. You can't let her know who you are.

The sheer thought of that was too much. Aelia wasn't good at dealing with feelings since coming out of the Lotus Casino. Sure, she'd always liked living in denial about some things, but this was different. If she stopped desensitizing herself in regards to her past, things would get ugly quicker than it took Caesar to invade Gaul. She had to stop … well, whatever the hell was going on right now. Another ribbon of memories unraveled in her head, rising from the foggy haze of the two thousand years she had spent eating lotus flowers. Flashes of ABBA songs, vague disco lighting, blurred laughter… dark hair flowing through her hands.. the softness of a peplos sliding to the ground…

"Deívaí," she growled to herself. Now was not the time!! Holding her sword behind her shield, she aimed a snappy roundhouse kick at Aikaterinē's knee and was about to follow it up with a slice to the head when something hit her shield hard. Aelia jumped back, sniffing the air. That acrid smell. Was that...? THWACK. She tasted sand through her visor. Whatever-it-was had been hurled with enough strength to topple her over. Fortunately, her demigod reflexes sent her back to her feet in an instant and she glanced around fast, looking for the projectile. That was before she noticed the black goo trickling from her shield in thick, oily strands.
Oh gods. She knew that thing.

"Hell no, good bye," she said and threw her shield away…. straight at Aikaterinē.

Aikaterinē expected to get beaten up, but this? Sweet pater how did anyone do this shit more than once?

Her charged spear trick seamed to work, sending the opposition back with an honestly jarring scream. The daughter of Zeus would have taken the chance to follow up with a charge at the masked gladiator, shocking them a few more times and getting them to drop out in shear agony. That would be nice, she thought, as the gladiator’s foot slammed right inti her knEE DEAR PATER F***ING SH—

“PÓPOI!”

Sandwiching her shield arm on impact, Aikaterinē swallowed some sand and her pride before rushing to get up. She noticed the pòrne was in the sand herself and began stepping up to capitalize on this. She’d go in with her spear and then pull out the xiphos and just go straight for her head like some kind of mellon—

THUWMP!

Aikaterinē grit her teeth as sand passed through the newly chipped incisors, thanks to that moikalìs throwing her shield at Kat’s legs. She really had to stop thinking and start actually attacking.

Kat jumped back to her feet, leaving her spear in the hot sand. No time to was—

“AIEGHHHHH!”

A quick glance at her shin sparked instant regret. Black goo. Red skin. White blisters. And the godsdamn burning. The daughter of Zeus had to bite into her lip just to keep from crying. As the goo dripped into her boot, Aikaterinē pulled out her xiphos and shocked it up. The blade dripped with blue and purple sparks, the inlaid copper sending the charge in a loop that made the shortsword feel like it was about to explode at any second.

She charged with sword raised and shield up, but something kept circling in her head as she ran at the phlyaros. She said something before she threw her shield, and while Kat did not catch exactly what she said, it was her voice. That cursed voice. It was shrill and furious but somehow called back fragments of midnight whispers, crowded dance floors, and the aroma of incense, opium and lotus. What the actual—

No, no, no, NO. You are thinking again Kat. Stop thinking and bash her f***ing head in.

“ALALÉÉÉÉÉ!”

Good news: the shield had hit its mark.

Bad news: Aikaterinē's leg was starting to get covered in big milky blisters. The noises of pain made it very hard for Aelia to concentrate, especially when her gut told her to go help her opponent. Stupid instincts. Stupid, unwanted memories. Desensitize yourself. But Aikaterinē was far from done. With a bone-chilling war cry, she charged straight at Aelia with a glowing sword. Fuck.

"Pollux!" she shouted and charged right back at the Sestian princess, determined to get this fight done with as fast as possible.

There it was again— that f***ing VOICE! Those shattered memories of nights long past but vivid. The softness of sheets, the coarseness of hair, the poetic sensation of two stars impossibly joining as one.

What kind of jackassery is this?!?! What kind of tactic was this, trying to get into your opponent’s head by playing with their most vulnerable emotions? Only the most myrton freak would do such a thing. Whoever was behind that golden mask had to answer for their tricks.

As the panoùgros drew closer, Aikaterinē had a choice: mancia or helmet? The helmet would probably put an end to the fight quickly, but hitting the mancia would probably not kill the Roman.

It was decided — she would swing for the mancia. She needed to see this bdelyròs for herself.

If Aikaterinē  had swung anything other than a sword charged up to full capacity with electricity, Aelia would've parried without hesitating. As much as she liked BBQ (now that it she had discovered it), she didn't fancy the idea of her arms turning into lamb chops.

Just before the sizzling sword hit her gladius, she ducked sharply, withdrawing her blade in a downwards slice. But whilst it kept her from the shock itself, it did not protect her from the blow. Aikaterinē's xiphos cut into her manica, which burst into flames under the electric charge.

"EHEU" she shouted, stumbling away. Her hands struggled to undo the straps, and she had no choice but to blindly hack at the thick cloth, hoping it would fall off without amputating herself.

The strike to the manica meant Aikaterinē had done her job. She rolled out of the way, getting ready for her opponent to strike back.

As she turned to face the gladiator again she expected to see them triumphantly rushing at her, sword high and regard left behind. Instead of heroics, she was in peril — the manica was ablaze.

After that moment, things became as hazy for Kat as the weaponized memories. One moment she was comfortably watching her opponent struggle with their faulty armor. The next she was mid-tackle, throwing all her weight into smothering the blazing arm guard. She moved before her brain could realize the situation, her instincts making the demigod a passenger of her body.

Aelia hit the ground. Again. But this time, it was because Aikaterinē had flung herself against her with all her might, knocking them both over into the sand of the arena. The crowd let out an "OOOOOOOHHH," everyone rising up to see what was happening. Had the Samnite been fatally stabbed? Was the hoplomachus about to get Pompey'd? Where was the blood? Children craned their necks in the marble bleachers, the images on the giant screens zooming in on their tangled bodies. Even the judges stirred in their ample seats.

She breathed hard, the inside of her mask damp with perspiration. It wasn't easy when her ex-lover was laying on top of her in the middle of a giant arena, pressing down on her, with thousands of Romans peering at them. Waiting to see them fight. But the daughter of Zeus had succeeded: by smothering her manica with her armour, she had managed to put out most of the flames. Aelia cut the rest free with her sword and flung the burning cloth as far away from them as possible. Her arm was burnt in a few places, but what did it matter? At least she still had an arm.
Now that the immediate danger was over, she glanced at Aikaterinē. She'd just saved one of her limbs. In an event that was supposed to feature them beating each other to a pulp with half of New Rome watching. Swords and gore and flashy powers. But in that moment, all Aelia could think of was that smell. That smell of rain and freshness, of storms and cedar. The same smell that had lingered in her bedsheets … a long time ago. Yet, it was still so familiar.
Concentrate.
She coughed hard, getting the smoke out of her lungs. "You shouldn't have done that," she croaked.

As the crowd gasped at the two combatants going down, Aikaterinē snapped back to reality. She slammed down on the masked opponent’s arm, choking out the flames engulfing it.

And then their eyes met. Through the holes of the visor the opponent glanced back at the daughter of Zeus, probably trying to psych her out. But Aikaterinē was more enthralled than intimidated. In those eyes there was a world, one where she had someone to turn to and be honest with. One where there was somebody who saw her as she was. One where “Aikaterinē of Sestos, Daughter of Zeus and Iantha” could simply be “Kat.”

How dare this pòrne call these up in a battle.

"You shouldn't have done tha‒ "

“BREKEKEKÉX!” Aikaterinē reached for the Roman’s helmet. After playing with her memories like this, she deserved to see the coward’s face with her own eyes.

"Ow!" Aelia blinked in the sudden light. Her helmet hit the ground in a cloud of sand, the visor clanging loudly. Wait, what? She looked aside, trying to scramble to get it, but it was too late. Her opponent had seen her face and judging from her look, she had not forgotten her. Aelia's blood started beating in her throat, hard. A turmoil of emotions boiled in her chest as both stood in front of each other. Was Aikaterinē going to toss aside her weapons and call it? Was she going to keep fighting? Did she even care for Aelia anymore?
The daughter of Pollux realized, she did not want Aikaterinē to make that choice. The precious head start she had was gone. She had to act.
The spotlights had found them and the cameras zoomed in even further. "FIGHT," the crowd chanted. "FIGHT."

The judges also gestured from their seats. "AGEDUM."

But Aelia was like deaf. She struggled to silence the feelings in her chest - not just the residual ones she still harboured for Aikaterinē, which had been asleep until now and triggered awake. No, it was much more than that. Everything that had happened before she escaped the Lotus Eaters had been locked away in the back of her mind, far away, where it could not do any damage. Everything she had faced and felt upon stumbling out in Las Vegas and realizing she was two thousand years old. All that pain and loss and grief and agony. She desensitized herself for a reason: if she was going to actually engage with the emotional mindfuck of being catapulted two milennias into the future, leaving behind everyone she had known and loved and hated and befriended…. she would go nuts.
And that exact mindfuck was staring her right in the face. If she unlocked those precious memories now, it was the end.
Aelia wasn't gonna stand there and wait for it to happen. Her eyes darted around for the exit. There.
Blasting Aikaterinē a warning glare, she turned on her heels and raced off as fast as she could. The crowd gasped and booed. "GO BACK. FIGHT HER!" Aelia focused on the door. Whoever was manning it had already started sliding it down. But the daughter of Pollux didn't care. On the last meters she threw herself forwards feet first and slid through the crack just a second before the gate slammed into the ground.

"Hey!" her optio yelled at her, grabbing her shoulder. "What do you think you're doing?"

"Fuck off," she snarled. Strength surged in her muscles and she blasted him back into the wall. His arm cracked, but she was already gone. No-one, not even the children of Mercury, were a match for her powers over speed.

Aikaterinē got up after unmasking the fighter, slowly rising from the ground without breaking eye contact with the Roman. However, this had nothing to do with the fact that they were in the middle of an arena and losing sight of her opponent would surely lead to eating sand again. It had nothing to do with a desire to make sure the person who played with her emotions realized they had lost in front of their friends, countrymen and fellow Romans.

No, it had everything to do with the utter bombshell that the fighter was not just some Roman but was actually—

“Aelia?”

It all made sense now. The flashes of her memories were not some asshole trying to psych-out their opponent, right? Aelia knew magic — and by the gods was she ever magical — but was she putting those thoughts back into Kat’s head? Was Aelia trying to send her a message that she was the one on the receiving end of Kat’s electric wrath?

Aikaterinē bit her lip, closed her eyes and clenched her fists. The pain of her decaying foot spiked back, but it was nothing compared to the inescapable fact that she had just tested Aelia like a dangerous monster or some drunk pirate. While she had the moment, Aikatetinē knew she had to come up with an apology. Her words probably would not fix the wounds, but they would be a start.

“Aelia,” she breathily said, “I... I am so sorr—“

As she opened her eyes, her lover — her friend — among the Lotus Eaters was gone, rushing toward a closing gate and out of her view. There would be no apology, at least not today. She picked up Aelia’s helmet, admiring it as if it was some sick trophy.

Aikaterinē looked around the stadium with a sigh, finally able to get lost in the scene. The mood of people had shifted. Earlier they had cheared for her, showering her with a hero’s welcome. Now a tube of meat wrapped in bread slammed into her helmet, staining the bronze red and yellow. As food, drink and refuse rained down on the sandy pitch, stadium workers rushed to collect the gladiators’ disposed items. One man in a polo and oven mitts picked up Aikaterinē’s spear while another used her shield to avoid hailing beer bottles. Shield-guy scooped Kat up, making room for the daughter of Zeus beneath the circle of safety before vanishing back into the bowels of the coliseum.
