History:
Maximilien Xavier St. Martin was born in New Orleans and promptly left in the solo care of Alectus St. Martin. Alectus, a son of Mercury, was a Professor of Linguistics and Cultural Anthropology at Tulane University. From a young age, Maximilien was steeped in his ancestry: Black, Jewish, and demigod. Max’s grandmother, Victoria (not the goddess, just a person), a child of Bacchus, lived with them in New Orleans after Alectus chose to move out of New Rome. She celebrated Jewish holidays with Alectus and Max and would tell stories of her grandmother, Esther, a Jewish woman from Hungary and her grandfather, Jacques, the grandson of a North Carolina slave. Through Victoria and Alectus, Max’s love of culture and history was cultivated at a young age. He traced his lineage back through Jacques all the way back through the Carolinas and Virginia, up through New York and to Salem before back to the Caribbean and Africa. Other parts of his family tree connected him back to France, Belguim, Germany, Corsica, Israel, and Austria. Maximilien was raised tri-lingually, growing up speaking English, French, and Yiddish around the house, with an emphasis on studying Latin and Hebrew as well. The family also travelled a lot, exposing Max to other cultures.
Maximilien’s magic manifested itself at a young age through spontaneous bursts of magic energy. As hard as he tried when he was young, he couldn’t channel and control his magic, leaving him at its whims a bit. Even when he got older and started to be able to control it, sometimes a controlled spell would be accompanied by one of these wild magic surges. This lack of control and an already cultivated love of history, culture, and language lead Max to studying magic around the world. From the priestesses of Ancient Egypt, to the voodoo queens of his hometown. From magic and miracles in the world’s major religions to witch hunts in places like Salem and France, and the earth magic of original peoples around the world. He channeled these magic styles and cultures into the inherent magic that he had from his mother, helping him learn how to control it. The magic surges prevailed, but less than before. Max theorizes that this has something to do with a certain chaotic or trickster nature in him, brewed from being a legacy of Bacchus and Mercury. By the age of 17, Maximilien fluently spoke 8 languages (English, French, Yiddish, Latin, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, and German) while having extensive knowledge in many older and cultural languages (such as Hebrew, Greek, Egyptian, Celtic, several regional African languages, and Gullah). Outside of his study of languages and culture, Max also took up a passion in dance.
Maximilien was a social kid who loved getting to know other people. He was always very socially aware and accepting of others no matter what. Max and his dad would often attend marches are rallies for different causes, giving Max the activist spirit. When a young boy at his school was being bullied because he had two dads and so he couldn’t go to the Mother-Son football game, Max organized a rally and made a petition to his school to start having more inclusive language and events for gender identity, sexuality, and other minority or marginalized groups.
Max was recruited for camp at the age of 11 and was placed in the fifth cohort, despite his connections because his powers and abilities were deemed to random to earn him a higher cohort. He worked like crazy to rise through the ranks of the fifth cohort and at the age of 17 became centurion.
