lets dance to joy division

Delilah had been hesitant the whole time to accept an invitation to a party that was being held in the Field of Mars. It wasn't really her thing with the loud music and the alcohol that would be there. Why did people want to drink in the first place? Well she could make some guesses at it, but that just made her more sad to think about it. On the plus side, Lilah didn't have to try and sneak out of her father's house to go to this party if she were to take up the offer. Lets be real, could you see Lilah sneaking out of a house? It'd include her trying to sneak passed all the creaking floor boards and then stopping dead in the house before decided to try and unlock the front door. Even then the house wasn't meant to be entered or left at this time of night, it wouldn't end well.
Either way Lilah sighed as the little pout began to form on her lips. She wasn't getting out of this. Her friend Skye whom lived down the road from her own house had invited her and she probably wouldn't take the no for an answer or in all honesty the young girl would just feel bad for saying no. She didn't want the possibility of making someone upset with her.
Her hand found its way down to her dog, Bear. She stroked his fur while she stared at herself in the mirror. This had to be her best outfit she could find for a party. She had on her long sleeve v-neck purple shirt with some black jeans. It seemed the best she could get, she didn't have a lot of revealing clothing and nor was she really interested in it.
"You ready, Bear?" Lilah asked in which Bear replied with a wag of his tail as he stood up to walk with her out the door to meet Skye.

The year is 2018, and Skye is happy. Its nice that the most she has to worry about tonight is the party getting busted, or Caroline starting something. She had spent a while getting ready, parties usually required an outfit that wasn't too casual for everyday where, but also not too fancy so that people thought you were trying to hard. She ended up settling on a crop top and jean shorts. The life of a teenage girl was certainly a difficult one.
Delilah's house was right down the street from hers. All the houses on their blocks looked like something out of an old black and white movie. Most of them were fairly knew, lovingly built by those who inhabited them. Her house was her grandmother's dream house. Large foyer, marbled floors, large windows overlooking the garden, it was perfect. So was Delilah's house, it looked almost ethereal. Skye was waiting by the white iron fence, leaning against it while texting some of the people that were going to be at the party. She slid the phone in her back pocket once she saw the front door open.
"Bear!" She almost squealed as the large Bernese mountain dog came bounding out, "I remember when you got him. He was so cute as a puppy." Skye makes note of Delilah's casual clothes, but doesn't say anything. She should wear what she's most comfortable in, even if it isn't Skye's idea of a party outfit.
"You ready to go?" She asks. The sun is already setting on the horizon, and far into the valley Skye is sure people have already begun carting the beer into the rickety structure made by the second cohort for the last war games.

Delilah watched as her dog came out to greet Skye. Bear was so energetic almost as he had been when he was a little pup back six years ago. He greeted Skye with the usually nudge of his nose and wagging of the tail even though Bear hadn't seen Skye in quite some time. When she mentioned the comment about him as a pup a smile crept onto her face, "Yeah he was, wasn't he? He's still a cute lil' guy now! He comes with me everywhere."
Seeing Skye in her outfit made her feel a little nervous and worried about what she was wearing herself. She didn't have anything like that, heaven forbid if she even brought a crop top into the house, she was sure her father would burn it and then make her clean up the mess. It wouldn't be a pretty sight. Even then would Lilah even like wearing crop tops, wouldn't it be cold?
Lilah's obsessive thoughts almost swept her away into the land of no return until the moment Skye asked her if she was ready to go. "Huh?" and then follow by an, "Oh.." The brunette said blinking her eyes a bit and then looking over to the familiar face she had know for years. "Yeah... Yeah I'm ready to go." Part of her was curious about what a party looked like and what would happen, then it occurred to her as they started to walk over that there might be dancing. "I don't dance."

The two of them start to walk down the winding hill that led into the valley beyond. "You don't have to dance if you don't want to. This is probably going to be more of a chilled out party. Like, beer pong, chatting, stuff like that. It'll be fun." Skye flashes Delilah a smile that she hopes is reassuring.
By the time they get to the fields of mars, the sun has already set and the loud music is starting to make the sheet metal on the fortress creak. They're probably going to be fine, the second cohort is pretty good at building fortresses, and they haven't had a fortress collapse in years. Skye can see people making their way over to the party from the barracks, and she hopes that everyone from her cohort was quiet enough not to wake her co-centurion. The last thing she needs is Carter showing up, then she would have to find a way to sneak out before he notices, and then be forced to help put on a very long skit on why drinking is bad. Knowing Carter she'd probably have to do some embarrassing rap while everyone thinks she's a hypocrite. Long story short, she does not want Carter to find out about this party.
Normally Skye would just disperse into the party, saying hello to everyone and trying to find her friends, but she remembers that her grandmother told her to make sure Delilah had fun. "So, do you want a drink?" She asks.

Delilah could the music from the moment the entered the field of Mars. It was loud and the first thing she thought about was turning around and just walking away with Bear somewhere quiet, maybe a stroll by the river or something would be nice. The cold front that would blow from the river and the soon to be starry sky would be wonderful about now. One of Lilah's favourite things was to try and look up at the stars with Bear to try and determine which constellations they could point out, it was one of the more peaceful times, unlike this. This was just something else.
Delilah didn't even know music could be this loud and the fact that it was felt almost as if her ear drums were being infiltrated with the sounds and vibrations. It took her a moment to adjust to the volume and get her bearings a little bit. "A drink?" Lilah asked quizzically for a moment as she was trying to ponder if she meant something like iced tea or something like beer. She wasn't sure how beer would taste and she wasn't one for surprises, but she also wasn't one for parties and there she was...standing in the middle of a party, "Uh, sure." Lilah said and not too long after Skye handed her a drink and right away she could smell the pungent smell.
"The Devil's drink." she muttered under her breath.

Skye goes off to go get drinks for the two of them, in the process starting and ending a conversation with the guy operating the keg. She returns to Delilah's side, handing her one of the drinks. Skye hears her comment, but pretends to be more invested with taking a long sip of her drink. She's starting to remember why the two of them grew apart. It wasn't like she wanted to, its just that they're so different. They had been thick as thieves when they were little, as most friendships with neighborhood kids go. Then suddenly she was in the legion with so many new people, and she's friendly and likes socializing. Delilah isn't like that. Now they're here, older and much more different.
Skye sees one of her friends across the room. Richard is another one of the kids from the neighborhood. Like Skye with age he became more popular, and here he was. He wasn't as wild as some of her other friends, and Richard knew Delilah, so he knew that she's out of her element. Its a safe choice. "C'mon," She says, taking Delilah's hand and leading her over to Richard.
"Skye!" Richard says as he sees her, though after a pause he seems to notice Delilah being towed behind, "And Delilah, wow, never thought I'd see that coming."
"Yeah I brought her along to show her how teenagers are supposed to act," Skye says with a laugh.
"How are things with you Delilah?" Richard asks.

It was interesting to see a totally different atmosphere than what she was used to. All these kids just throwing back alcohol left and right and becoming drunk was something very different than what she seen before. Sure there was that one time she had caught her sister stumbling in drunk from a party. The cohort she had been placed in had really changed her, she had the smell of alcohol on her breath more often and you could hear the fights between the two of them, maybe that's why she didn't act like 'a normal teenager' as put into the words by the famous Skye.
Sometimes she wondered if she'd have turned out the same if she had just received those recommendation letters, but maybe that was secretly part of her dad's plan all along. It wasn't new that Lilah would be making conspiracies about her father and about everything in general, it was hard growing up with a rather religious father in a society that basically debunks it, but the last thing the brunette wanted was to be out-casted by her family, the only people she really had at this point ever since she had grown apart from the neighborhood kids.
Then she remembered she had a conversation to be apart of, she stared at the drink for a few moments and then just decided in a split second to put the rim of the solo cup up to her lips and tip the drink back into her mouth. The contents poured in and she tried her best to conceal the urge to want to choke on it before she looked over to Richard. "Not a whole lot, just the usual. Training, hanging out with Bear." Lilah made motion to Bear who was next to her. "How about you, Richard?"
The contents of the cup were definitely beer and it was definitely a drink that was as foul as it was made out to sound.

"Oh you know," Richard says, "SATs, training, I'm thinking about going to Brown." He goes on about balancing studying and the legion, and Skye is grateful she still has another year or so before she has to start thinking about college. She might even try to stick around and run for praetor. Regardless, all of that was something that she didn't have to think about now, even if Richard seemed so intent on talking about it.
Suddenly whoever was in charge of the music decided that hearing other people talk was unnecessary. The volume got louder and louder, until Skye could feel the baseline shaking the ground. "Oh my god." She says, and turns to Delilah and Richard, "I'll be right back." She tries to use as many facial expressions and hand signals to let the other two know what she's saying, but eventually just gives up and gives them a quick wave.
It takes her a couple minutes to get through the crowd of people, and she almost loses her hearing in the process. She wasn't sure what the supposed dj thought they were doing, but they were either going to give everyone in the area tinnitus or alert Carter and probably the praetors to their location. Neither of those situations seemed like a good idea. So, when she found the very sketchy sound setup, she forcibly turned the whole thing down to a normal level. It was hard to tell if people were thanking her for it, mainly because she still had some ringing in her ears. Her job as a centurion was never over.

At the mention of SATs the girl instantly felt a wave of nerves. It was something her father kept telling her she needed to study for if she wanted to get into a good school. He made it clear that she wasn't cut out for the legion life so she was best to get her ten years over with and then go on to university and be useful in another way. It always sounded harsher than it was, but in some way there was a bit of relief knowing that she wasn't expected to be this great war hero or that she wasn't expected to be centurion of a cohort, even the thought of it was mildly entertaining to the demigod. Her? As centurion? She could just see herself messing up different drills, heck she already did mess up drills.
When Skye was trying to leave there was no way to hear whatever it was she was saying, and in a few moments she was just gone. The music felt as if it were vibrating the ground and then up through her bones. You could feel the beats of the music in your chest if you tried hard enough. A few times Delilah tried to speak loud enough for Richard to hear her, but it didn't quite work, so instead she just decided to finish the drink she had been handed, at least there was no more of the god forsaken drink left in her cup.
A few moments later the music was turned down again and she could finally reply, "Do you know what you want to go to Brown for? My dad is trying to prepare me now for SATs. He has the tutor stop by the house more often than he used to. Wants me to try for med school one day."
